How to choose accounting software for Quebec SMBs in 2026
Practical criteria for Quebec SMBs: Canada hosting, GST/QST compliance, French support, transparent pricing. QuickBooks, Sage, Acomba, Forge Tech compared.
By Guillaume Regimbald, Forge Tech Accounting Founder
You own or manage a SMB in Quebec and you're shopping for new accounting software. Sage is too complex. Acomba dates from the 90s. QuickBooks bills you in US dollars and hosts your data with Uncle Sam. How to decide? Here are the 7 criteria that actually matter in 2026 — not the marketing.
1. Where is your data stored?
This is the number one criterion since Quebec's Law 25 took effect in 2024. If your accounting data (customers, vendors, payroll, bank transactions) is hosted in the US, it's subject to the American CLOUD Act: FBI, IRS and other federal agencies can access it without notifying you.
For a Quebec SMB managing health data (clinic), Social Insurance Numbers (payroll), or sensitive commercial contracts, this is a legal and ethical risk.
Question to ask the vendor: "Are your servers physically in Canada?" If the answer is "our main datacenter is in the US but we have a replica zone in Canada", that's not the same thing.
2. Native Quebec tax compliance
A good Quebec accounting software must natively handle:
- GST 5% + QST 9.975% (with pre-configured codes)
- HST in Atlantic provinces (13-15%)
- Input tax credit calculation (ITC/RTI)
- GST-QST report generation ready to file with Revenu Québec (FPZ-500-V form)
- For payroll: QPP, EI, QPIP, HSF, QC + federal taxes, T4, RL-1, T4 summary, T5018 construction
If the software requires manual configuration for Quebec taxes, you're in a poorly adapted American product. Move on.
3. The real 3-year cost
Marketing price comparisons are misleading. What matters is TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) over 3 years.
| Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | 3-yr TOTAL | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks Online Plus | $360 (promo) | $1,200 | $1,500 | $3,060 |
| + Quebec Payroll module | $480 | $540 | $600 | $1,620 |
| QuickBooks total | $840 | $1,740 | $2,100 | $4,680 |
| Forge Tech Pro | $1,188 | $1,188 | $1,188 | $3,564 |
Forge Tech includes Quebec payroll in all Pro and Enterprise plans (no extra module). And there's no "year 1 promo pricing" that doubles in year 2.
4. Real French technical support
You have a payroll bug on Wednesday night before the GST remittance. How long before a human who speaks your language answers?
- Forge Tech: email reply < 24 h (Starter), 4 h (Pro), 1 h (Enterprise) — reply by Guillaume or his Quebec team
- QuickBooks: chat with an agent often in India or Philippines, standard English, sometimes transferred to Quebec after 30+ minutes
- Sage: email reply within 2-5 business days, French (but old system)
- Acomba: excellent French support, but non-cloud software
5. Quebec industry modules
Is your business in a regulated Quebec sector? Check for:
- Construction: CCQ module (Commission de la construction du Québec) with employer contributions by trade/sub-sector, monthly remittance
- Non-profit: T1044 reports, R12 contribution
- Rental real estate: T776, Quebec residential leases
- Restaurant: tips, MEV (Quebec sales recording module)
QuickBooks and Sage 50 handle none of these natively. Forge Tech includes them in the Enterprise plan.
6. Migration and export — your data ownership
You'll switch accounting software in 3 years. How easy to retrieve your data?
- Ask: "Can I export all my bookkeeping in CSV/Excel anytime, at no cost?"
- Ask: "Can I bulk-export my attachments (receipts, vendor bills)?"
- Ask: "On cancellation, how long before you delete my data?"
The terms of use contain these answers. A serious vendor makes them easy to find. If you have to search, bad sign.
7. Is the founder accessible?
An underrated but critical criterion for SMBs. Can you talk to the founder if you have a major problem?
- QuickBooks / Sage: no, it's Intuit Inc. (USA) and Sage plc (UK), publicly traded
- Acomba: no, it's ACCEO Solutions (1000+ employees)
- Forge Tech: yes, my phone number is on the site, I answer emails personally
For a SMB starting up, that changes everything: you don't fight a ticket system to get a critical bug fixed.

Our honest recommendation
If you're a Quebec or Canadian SMB starting up or fed up with QuickBooks' hidden costs, Forge Tech is probably your best bet in 2026. Local hosting, transparent pricing, Quebec payroll included, industry modules (construction, non-profits, real estate).
If you're a Canadian franchise of a US chain with strict corporate requirements, QuickBooks remains a de facto standard for US system integration.
If you're a very small business (solo, <5 transactions/month), Wave (free) may suffice — though Wave doesn't handle Quebec payroll.
